When I was an entertainment reporter in Hollywood, the biggest and brightest Hollywood stars taught me something that everyone should learn. Your success depends on it.
The award shows give recognition to the best new artist, best new group, etc. I would often interview the “Best New Star” only to find out that he or she had been in the business for 10 or 15 years. The “new success” came after years of what others would call failures. Instead, they saw them as obstacles to be overcome.
The leadership of successful nonprofit organizations find themselves (at times) surrounded by obstacles. You’ll extricate yourself if you can do 2 things:
1. Hold back and gather people around you that you can trust.
2. Keep your mind open so that when good advice comes, you can listen. People quickly give up on helping those who think they know everything better than anybody else. – Shar McBee
Shar,
Right on. When you are not heard by “a know it all” soon there is silence.
